Jack Layton’S Speech To The Montreal Council On Foreign Relations

Our citizens have ties to countries in every corner of the globe. We have the natural resources that other countries depend on. And we have a history of accomplishments to build on. Sadly, ordinary Canadians watched for 13 years as Liberal government after Liberal government slowly eroded Canada’s ability to live up to that potential. And now, for the last 16 months, they have watched as Stephen Harper’s Conservative government continues to take Canada down the wrong path, further and further away from the positive role it could play – that it should play – on the world stage. Over these past 14 and a half years everyday people in this country have witnessed a failure of leadership. Just this week we are seeing that failure at the G8 meeting in Germany. Before boarding his plane for Europe, Stephen Harper told Canadians that his government planned to act as a broker at the meeting. Harper said that his government would try to play a conciliatory role between the European and American positions on climate change. But we know that this was a hollow promise. http://www.ndp.ca/page/5419 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on June 11, 2007]
