The Hon. Ronalee, Minister Of Pollution

Posted on Saturday, October 21 at 10:41 by BC Mary
As a tactic, it owes plenty to U.S. presidential contests. Candidates there scavenge voting records to savage each other for not supporting legislation with feel-good titles hiding hideous flaws. It's also not new for a government that relentlessly labels itself "new." Ideology and populism emerged as the prevailing currents early in this minority and are only gaining strength as the Conservative grip on power weakens. Wilfully blind to bureaucratic policy options and isolated from all but a few cabinet ministers and advisers, Harper's guidance comes from his own unshakeable certainty. Causes are disconnected from effects and facts are no match for beliefs. Sure, there's a certain appeal to simple Conservative solutions after watching Paul Martin's Liberals make every decision labyrinth difficult. But the sad result is a federal government now asking history's most educated and informed citizens to park their brains at the door and go with their gut. http://tinyurl.com/ydvsnw [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on October 23, 2006]

This is such a good article, that I too submitted it this a.m.. What I love about James Travers is that he writes like a human being living and breathing on the planet not like someone that is so far removed from our daily lives and reality that were we to listen to them we would all believe our world was full of terrorists from other countries rather than sitting in our own governments and CEO's offices.

Last night PBS's NOW showed how people in the states are trying to clean up their electoral system with what is called "Clean Elections". I don't know if it is the answer to everything but it allows anyone to run rather than only those that can buy votes with a fancy campaign and outrageous donations from the elite. I think it has some similarities to how Canada funds campaigns in that tax dollars are used along with grassroots donations.

I think getting corporations out of government is one of the biggest leaps we can make in having a healthy environment.

About Jim Travers, 4Canada, he's a journalist who will read the messages
his readers send him, and usually comments. I like him a lot, too.

I watched that program, too. I would love to see election financing laws in Canada similar to those enacted in Arizona. That type of public financing of campaigns in conjunction with proportional representation for voting is necessary to reinvigorate North American democracy and get some lively political debates going.

I appreciate the article as well. I also would agree with the debates for candidates. Have you ever seen an actual debate during an election? I don't mean the forums we have in Alberta, where the incumbent has a love in with his/her supporters, and the chair of the meeting makes sure that no one is allowed to ask hard questions. I would like to see questions from the audience,(the electorate) and those questions which can be debated with facts to support(or no facts are revealed) and where all candidates can speak to the issues. This would be a far better way for the people to find out what the people running are really all about, not just what the party line says. Although that would also require a change in the corporate party's system. They would have to allow their candidates to represent the people who pay them. The term public servant is under used and under represented. They often call the forums job interviews, but if that was true, the employer would be able to ask all candidates the questions they want asked, not just the pre-arranged questions.

Please take the following in the spirit it is given.
Speaking as one who can see through to one of the truths of "the system" I support what you say above with one small and important modifiction.

"but if" Is far to kind to those who manitulate us for their gain.
"It is" most Emphatically! It is true! And some how truth has been hidden and in place of truth lies had been planted and taken growth to become “belief”

    Good stuff CWC!
