...Mr. Martin said the opposition will soon have an opportunity to defeat the budget if it wants a trip to the polls.
"The Leader of the Bloc knows full well that according to the opinions of the experts, this is a question of procedure, not a question of confidence," he said...
...NDP Leader Jack Layton said it is up to the Prime Minister to decide what is or is not confidence. He accused the Tories and Bloc of playing games and called for a quick vote on two budget bills before the House...
...Although the government and the opposition disagree over whether the government has lost confidence, the government's view will almost certainly prevail.
Only Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson could overrule the government."

Also, I'm confused by the expectation that Martin must command majority support in the HoC; I thought he only had a minority government? Would he have survived such a vote of no confidence even one day after getting elected?

Every time you complain about the moderators, god kills a kitten.
Man! I don't "get it"
OUT. IN. What ever happent to, or is it only an urbasn myth?
To creating a country for the common man?
Quite frankly I believe "we" "should" simply rollover and accept the tyranny of our corporatre masters.
I am so freakin angry I can't even begin to frame my thoughts in a coherent manner
A number of years ago an aquintence suggested the politicos shopuld be allowed to screw up three times and on the third screw up taken out and shot!
Well that aint gonna happen because the "we" are powerless and will always remain so human nature being what it is!
Harper must be chomping at the the bit seeing all that corruption and not being able to HIS hands on it!
But wait! There's MORE!
the propaganda mill and opinion shapers to do their brand of black magic loved so much by the electorate and "party" supporters
NDP and Liberal votes in the last election together are more than that of the combined Conservative/Bloc vote added together. So what we have is the minority trying to overthrow the majority.
Conservatives have always put themselves on the side of special interests and big business and that is especially telling with their joining with the seperatists of the Bloc. They will do whatever it takes to advance their own agendas.
Polls show most Canadians don't want another election yet. Those same polls also say that Canadians are sick of the liberals, but thats it, they don't want that extended into another election. Will the Conservative crowd ever get that? I highly doubt it.
Me too. It matters little whether you agree or disagree with the conservative platform or agenda, the irresponsible behavior in blocking any useful action within the house and taking every opportunity to force a premature and costly election that will almost certainly result in more of the same is nothing short of sickening. It guarantees that I will not even consider voting for them.

When you are up to your ass in alligators it is difficult to remember that the initial objective was to drain the swamp
It would be much cheaper for Canada in the long run to throw out the Liberals and jail some of them rather than allow them to take our money(sometimes in suitcases) and 'govern'.
The waste and mismanagement has been acceptable to those Canadians who don't care about immoral/illegal activity only because our economy is doing so well, if their wasn't so much money and so many jobs available - even those Canadians who don't care about or know the difference between right and wrong would want to throw out the Liberal Party, they would stop voting for them too.
The NDP got suckered by Martin and his cronies - Jack is so naive it's incredible.

Layton did the best he could within the parameters of parliament, he just didn't go far enough. I don't get a sense that any of them care about their constituents, or about governing the nation. It is all about power, Martin wanted it so bad, he started his plan before Chretien left, which caused the beginning of the feeding frenzy, the Cons had their own, so ugly that they forced Clark out of politics, sacrificed Orchard and many members, and made their own side deals. Duceppe is also seizing a moment to destroy Canada, if he can, and Harper is helping him do it. None are worthy of elected office,(IMO) to serve the people of Canada.

If I stand for my country today...will my country be here to stand for me tomorrow?
I realise this is a weak expression but, “Better the devil you know…”
The current administration is the devil we know.
Harper and his crowd don’t deserve a “chance”
Hell if you want “chance” make, me dictator.
There is some truth in the following statement and more in the fact Canadians blindly adhere to all rules
”As Canadians---especially academics---we have a reputation for courtesy.”
Until the electorate begin to take an active role in the politics of to-day by some system that reacts instantly to the behaviour of their elected representatives, and that is all they are-representatives the politicos will continue to behave in the manner they now do.
I really don’t give a big rats a** what they promise!
It is what they DO that concerns me!
Until the electorate hold the politicians accountable rather than bleating what ‘should be done’ and organise to DO IT, it will be business as usual for-freakin-ever!
I am 65 years of age and voted all my adult life and never once have I had a representative in parliament, the legislature or city hall, whether they were from my party of choice or not.

If I stand for my country today...will my country be here to stand for me tomorrow?
Prior to the merger I was active in the Progressive Conservative Party. After what went on during the merger I could never support the new party because the whole process was corrupt. That party was born corrupt.
Voting for one of the old guard has proved not to be the answer to the democratic deficit in this country. Both old guard parties are owned by the same people. Bay Street bought the merger of the Canadian Alliance and the Conservatives and that "unite the right" mantra was promoted by the national media. The same people financed Martin and the Liberal Party.
I agree that we have to start looking far more seriously at the minor parties. There is one good reason for doing that. The people who run for these minor parties are not doing this as opportunists, as are the "star" candidates recruited by the other parties. These people are generally committed to community service and positive change. They are trying to get their voices heard over the din of the power hungry opportunists.
Unless these people are brought back into the debate the status quo will remain in place. I work with the Progressive Canadian Party, but I also like some of the ideas of the Greens, CAP, the NDP. I would like to see the fiscal conservatism of the Progressive Canadians, combined with the policies that promote opportunities of the NDP, the environmentalism of the Greens, and the Canadianism of the CAP. We desperately need a new coalition of the center.
The new Conservatives argued that they did not have to honour the contract with Orchard because the Progressive Conservative Party no longer existed even although the law governing the merger required that the new party assume all financial obligations of the the merged parties. The courts have ordered the party to return that money but the party is refusing.
One of the arguments put forward by some of the members of the party is that they don't like anything Orchard stands for so it is acceptable for the party to keep the money.
Why should anyone trust that kind of a party with their money when such evidence is available that they are not trustworthy?
