Danes Call Graham's Hans Visit 'occupation'

Posted on Wednesday, July 27 at 19:28 by jensonj
The news comes one day after the Danes sent a protest to Canada over Mr. Graham's decision to land on Hans Island last week. Experts say that if Canadian or Danish officials want to make the strongest case possible that the island is part of their country, the best way to do it would be to inhabit the area or, at the very least, promote some research. "Certainly if you don't occupy a region, that can weaken your case," said Ron Macnab, a retired marine geophysicist. "And a good way to occupy a region is to get up there and do some work or to have people live there." Hans Island, of course, is so far north and so tiny that most experts don't believe it's worth much right now. But there could be mineral resources under the adjacent sea bed and, should global warming make the area more hospitable, it could prove to be economically important. Another expert said, should the issue go to an international tribunal, the first question normally asked will be whether the claimant occupied the land. I guess that whole "nationalism is a thing of the past" doesn't apply to this, right? :)

The funny thing about countries fighting with words, chestbeatings and willingness to go to war over worthless pieces of rock, is that at the same time they're inviting some of the biggest criminals on Earth to come in, take over and exploit their lands and resources, impoverish and destroy their peoples in the name of "wealth creating foreign investment". Canada is an excellent example of this madness.

Not really. The agreement between Denmark and Canada never settled the issue.
Contested territories were simply left to be settled at a later date - one which
    never came.

Funny that we should be fighting for the decades-away profits of global
warming's negative impacts, rather than, say, give preventing it a chance. Clearly
the Liberals aren't planning for a 'green future'.

Exactly my sentiments Ed. It's obvious that Graham has only the balls to confront those "scumbag" Danes on his own. Don't confront foreign takeovers. Don't confront Global warming.

I don't think it's a good idea to enlarge our military budget because it seems to only engorge stupidity and get Graham acting all big for his britches. Have you noticed how visible he's become along with Hillier now that they have more money? I guess they think we can afford a war of our own now. No wonder Canada won the "stupidest government in the world" award, they deserve it.
