U.S. Trade Court Rules Softwood Duties Illegal

Posted on Monday, July 24 at 08:27 by jensonj
Last year, a NAFTA panel found that Canadian softwood imports did not threaten American lumber producers, despite U.S. claims to the contrary. Signed July 1, the deal would allow the U.S. to keep about $1 billion US of the $5 billion it has collected in penalties on Canadian softwood since 2002. It would also limit Canadian exports to the U.S. if American lumber prices begin to fall. When next election rolls around will the media and the people of Canada remember Harper's acquiescence to the beast next door? The law is on our side - their courts even agree.

That's a best case scenario, Roy. It's one that I honestly hope happens.

Assuming that the federal Liberals get a leader who is pro-Canada and not pro-business interests, and that NDP leader Jack Layton gets off his ass and DOES something beyond blather incoherently and offer nothing concrete, it just could happen.

If not, may God have mercy on us all.

There must be an echo in here. Unfortunatly the Americans are stone deaf. The ruling makes absolutely no differance. Just when will Canadians learn. Harper will pass his agreement none the less. Canadians are the fool to even think anything has changed. A bigger fool to think Harper will not side with the Americans.

Harper is ruling as though he has a majority government, simply because he knows (and the so-called "oppostion" leaders know) the voting populace would crucify any party that dares offer up a no-confidence motion, and make us get off our asses to vote again..........

I too thought this was Harper's "Mission Accomplished" and then it turns out it has to be voted on in the House and then it turns out they are still in court battles? No wonder we consider politicians liers, they are!

In Emerson’s opinion as well as the Harper Conservative Government, the best way for Canada to remain competitive is not to diversify, but to boost exports and investment within North America.

Looking after our own domestic markets first and foremost as well as having a diversified foreign trade with other countries other then the United States, is the only way Canada will be able to enforce a level playing field with outside markets and free trade agreements with the United States. That includes processing our own raw materials!

We have to stop putting all our eggs in one basket. All we are doing is making Canada sub-servant to the United States of America in trade not an equal trading partner. There is no way with a population of 33 million can Canada or Canadian Business compete in or defend its self against the U.S. 298 million population market or the amounts of money it is able to throw at American market interests.

Canadian Business have to receive equal access to American markets as well as State and Federal industry assistance programs as they American Businesses are given here in Canada.

Surly the resent Cattle industry and the Softwood Lumber problems are a small but exceptionally good example of the unbalanced trade agreements and treaties that produce these problems with trade between Canada and the U.S.A.

The only way Canadian business will be able to achieve what the Harper Conservative Government wants is for every Canadian Company to be treated as American home grown Business not a foreign Company or industry.

In the end Canadians should realize that the only people who will loose and have to pay the Business costs and loses are the Canadian consumer.

Hell hasn’t frozen over yet has it nor is it likely to in the near future!

Good post jensonj, I thoroughly agree with what you have said here. I live in a community that is being logged to death, (pine beetle infestation a result of that in my opinion)and the logs are driving down the highways (also adding to the cost of highways and lives) when the province and feds could be helping to start up local enterprises that utilize some of these logs and really create jobs if they ever took the time to think of the future of this province or the country.
