NDP Takes Outremont, Conservatives Take Bloc Seat

Posted on Tuesday, September 18 at 09:01 by sthompson
From NDP takes Outremont: "The New Democrats established a historic new beachhead in Quebec and rattled the federal Liberal Party yesterday as former provincial environment minister Thomas Mulcair trounced Stéphane Dion's hand-picked candidate, Jocelyn Coulon, in the Outremont by-election.

Dion, after a disappointing outing in his first electoral test since becoming Liberal leader, will face intense questions from a profoundly unhappy party.

While Mulcair and NDP leader Jack Layton were jubilant last night, Liberal disquiet with Dion's leadership has hit new lows. Not only did the party fail to show well in two other Quebec by-elections, it could not hold a Montreal fortress that has been in party hands, with one brief exception, since 1935."

From Liberals trounced in Quebec by-elections: "The right and left wings of Canada's political spectrum got a boost last night from three Quebec by-elections that pounded Stéphane Dion's Liberal party and dealt a blow to the province's sovereignists.

The minority Conservative government added a seat in Roberval-Lac-Saint-Jean, giving it 126 MPs. A troubled Liberal party lost its traditional fortress in the Montreal riding of Outremont to the New Democratic Party, which ran a popular former Quebec environment minister, Thomas Mulcair..."

(snip)

"...The NDP victory in Outremont is significant for two reasons: The riding has gone Liberal in all but one election since 1935. As well, Mulcair profited from his personal popularity to win just the second seat ever in Quebec for the left-wing party. (The first was consumer advocate Phil Edmunston, who won a 1990 by-election.)

"Today, Quebec has chosen a new direction," NDP Leader Jack Layton told a cheering crowd in Outremont as he congratulated them for "making history and changing the direction of politics in Quebec and across Canada." I wouldn't call it a "profoundly unhappy Party", I'd call it a profoundly
backstabbing party, with the same vicious tactics seen in the Chretien/Martin
debacle carried on mere days after the leadership convention in Montreal.
I hope we find out who put the binders on this Outremont by-election
campaign. It was defensive and innocuous from the beginning.
Begining with pathetic Coulon posters, a kind of sickly green wash and thin
lettering, touched off with a timid little "Liberal" stuck in the corner. All of this
further embellished with a sort of CIBC dark red colour instead of healthy
bright Liberal red. But that detail alone will not lose an election. A
concentrated effort to impede will, especially if from within as some
journalists have indicated. Perhaps there are too many leftover guys from the
past regime. Stephane Dion has some housecleaning to do. Integrity's not
enough when dealing with these old line characters.

This is excellent. Does anyone else know that the Liberals have traditionally been over-represented in Quebec? (meaning the percantage of seats they win is higher than their percentage of the vote) Despite what "westerners" say the Liberals are also under-represented in "western Canada." I wonder what the reasons were for the Liberals & Bloc Quebecois getting shut out? Hopefully the Liberals bite the dust in the next election; I wouldn't want them screwing up all the good stuff the Cons have started up so far.

    Anything?

As far as I'm concerned anyone who voted for the Conservatives rather than the
BLOC just changed their vote from on separatist party to another.

Did anyone else catch politics on CBC with Don Newman today? He talked to a Liberal organizer who said some people in the Liberal party want to have an election asap so the Dion-led Liberals can lose & then they can get rid of Dion & find a new leader! lmao

Well as far as I'M concerned the "Cons" are bringing the country together, with that trans-canada power grid & their gateway initiatives.

I'm concerned the CPC are just talking out their arse. How many of their election promises die on the table when they call a new session?

What was the first thing Harper did to end cronyizm, 'adscams' and political appointments? He appoints a campaign advisor to the senate, and puts him in charge of the most corrupt post in government - HRDC.

History might be on Dion's side; there has been only one Liberal leader who has never become PM. (I hope he doesn't though)
