Bill Graham has also raised the illegality of killing civilians and destroying civilian infrastructure. More than opposition leader and former foreign minister, he is one of Canada's leading experts on international law.

The leaders of the European Union, Russia and Japan, as well as the International Red Cross, have said that Israel has a right to defend itself but that it may be violating the principle of proportionality provided for under the Geneva Conventions.

In three successive columns on August 21, August 25 and August 28, 2005 Haroon Siddiqui relentlessly hammered home the idea that Israel alone was to blame for the Arab-Israeli conflict. He even turned over an entire column to three Arab Canadians who poured forth a litany of anti-Israel charges.
He also charged "Iraq was secular, with women enjoying rights. Now it is controlled by clerics who want to control women."
What about the Arab countries he cheerleads for. They aren't noted for their progressive roles which he doesn't get around to mentioning. At least they vote in Iraq.
Over the past year (2005), Siddiqui referenced Israel -- almost always negatively -- in a third of his columns. Of 69 columns Siddiqui authored from Sept 6, 2004 to Sept 5, 2005, 9 columns (13%) were focused primarily on the Arab-Israeli conflict, and another 13 columns (19%), while about other issues, nevertheless referenced Israel.
There is an important line separating legitimate opinion that enhances the public discourse, from ideological rhetoric that interferes with constructive dialogue. It is time for the Star to insist that Siddiqui stick to constructive opinion that contributes positively to the marketplace of ideas. And it is time for the Star to balance Siddiqui's one-sided content by hiring additional columnists who do not espouse the simplistic idea that Israel is always wrong.
Vive Le Canada could also present a balance instead of reprinting whatever hack journalists that fits their tired and failed left-wing politics.
Until then beware of what they try to sell you.

    Two observations JT,
First: it would be appropriate for you to present your argument of how the Star ought to take care of its business to the Star.

Second: Vive presents a variety of opinions from its members and non non-members alike. By your identifying ‘failed left-wing politics.’ the un-stated assumption is there are successful right-wing politics. And those who hold other opinions other than are now relegated to some position beneath that of your own

If your intention is to bring converts into your fold, John I can guaranteed you will have little success using your current tactics

Is the readership to now assume you have "bought" the truth?

The thing about the "right" (use of the word "left" presumes there is a "right"), is they have no comprehension of history and historical wrongs. There is only today, no yesterday, and certainly no tomorrow (except perhaps as some sort of spectral extensions of "today")..............
