"Freak Out Your Profs" & Join Conservative Party

Posted on Saturday, January 05 at 15:46 by N Say
The surge is evident at Queen's University, a blue-chip school in Kingston, Ont. Despite the university's strong Tory roots, membership in the campus club sank to the low double digits at the start of the decade, when the country's two main conservative parties were still divided. But more than 200 members now subscribe to the club's e-mail list, and club events can attract as many as 40 people on a "good day," said Alex Bednar, president of the Queen's Campus Conservatives. "Conservatives almost used to be seen as pariahs. People are now seeing us as a more viable option. The more politically ambitious kids are joining, because they see what's happening in Ottawa," said Bednar, a 21-year-old history major. The recruitment drive has been boosted by a series of ads rolled out by the federal Conservatives that poke fun at what they perceive as the left-wing bias at Canadian academic institutions. One ad shows a woman in glasses, with a blue tagline that says, "Freak out your prof. Join the Conservatives." It declares that professors who grew up "questioning authority" of becoming advocates of "consensus." "The best way to freak out your prof is tell them that you believe in bucking the establishment, thinking with your own mind, and yes--'questioning authority.' In other words: Tell them you're a Conservative." ... http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=6448da11-8277-426a-bd8b-4058b748d224&k=90312

I am getting the impression that the Conservatives are totally losing their focus and getting sidetracked by "controlling info" including academic freedom of thought. Not that I don't have many problems with the elite teaching in our universities (in fact not using this freedom of thought) but I can see now that more academics will think of their own as a result of Harper's conservatives lack of judgment. I have found Harper brilliant on many occasions but I really think that his arrogance as a minority government has now reached a point of non-return. I am hopeful that he will be kicked out at the next election.<br />

Le Devoir published yesterday an outstanding letter from a collectif accusing Harper of controlling the press and it must stop.<br />

Harper's major faults are that he's lacking honesty, sincerity, and a genuine desire to represent the publics interest. The sooner he's kicked out the better.

All that he's doing that may be agreeable, is being done because he does not yet have a majority government. And despite trying very hard to sucker the public into voting for him, he just cannot help but be an arrogant a-hole.

I can understand why campuses are responding to the Conservative Party message as a former Liberal myself I have come to the same conclusion. Being a political animal for many years has given me some small insight to follow. Harper is in many ways one of the most honest, clear and concise leaders that we have had in a very long time perhaps this is because he is an economist and not a lawyer and more often than not what he says is exactly what it is (I like that in a politician much like Trudeau and Chretien who had this similar trait to a degree) he is more of a westerner than an typical Ontario\Quebec political animal. Harper is also as far away from a corporate elitist that you can get. My hint that we had something special here in Canada was when he kept all of his promises after being elected except with the income trust situation and that was a righteous decision to stop the abuse of this particular investment. And anybody who seriously thinks Dion will win the next election has been living in Ontario way too long and probably only reads news that he or she agrees with.

Harper seems pretty arrogant in calling for transparency and accountability while squashing an important mechanism to achieve it. He reminds me very much of Mulroney condemning Trudeau on building a canadian debt and doubling with while in office. Hypocrisy seems prevalent whenever there is money and power involved. Not only within the academic spheres IMO...

    As Psiclone says . .

"Harper is in many ways one of the most honest, clear and concise leaders that we have had in a very long time"

That being very relative. Harper isn't a choir boy, but he certainally isn't PM Shawinnigate or Captain Steamship ether.

Well there's an authoritty fo ya

"Harper is in many ways one of the most honest, clear and concise leaders that we have had in a very long time"

And while all that may be true I am prompted to ask. "Honest clear and concise of what and for whom?"

Harper will end up with his own tag. and for those without the ability to see the game of politics for what it is: The game of paying heed to ones owners, you have bought into the con game Helmet head Haeper is a tool of, as are they all, the Rulers of the Universe as laid out by their cookie cutter agendii

    (deleted your second post . . )

"And while all that may be true I am prompted to ask. "Honest clear and concise of what and for whom?"

As I said, it's all relative. *More* clear and concise than his predecessors, who could obfuscate a 'yes' or 'no' answer.

He's still a lying dirtbag, who doesn't love Canada, but he at least tends to answer direct questions directly, or not at all.

And I do agree they are all puppets. Harper just hasn't had the time to become as dirty as his predecessors.
