Smart. For Sure. But Cold

"Still," Winters says, "he should be given a chance. I don't think the Liberals are doing a very good job and there's no one else." Lavonne Howard, another of Harper's constituents, is harsher. "I'm really disappointed that he's our choice," she explains over lunch at a pizza parlour in a south Calgary mall. "I can't relate to him in any way. He seems polished, looks right. But what can I say? He has too much hair spray." In a Safeway supermarket just a few doors down from Harper's constituency office, Sheena Meurin turns away from the paper towels to ponder a reporter's question. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1114813812644&call_pageid=970599109774&col=Columnist969907626796

Calgary isn't Harper's hometown. He only went to school there. He's originally from Ontario!

Let's get a Hollywood actor instead! Someone who can 'feel our pain' and all that good stuff! Feel-goodisms have worked well for the Liberal party - they're really very shmoozy with the feel good talk, and most voting Canadians being stupid - the Liberals get to retain power and steal as much money as they want, even if they never fix health care, unify the country or really help people at all - they get to retain power by image and scare tactics - and in Canada that leads to riches. Canada has sought to become a pathetic, feckless backwater and achieved it very well now since half the country lives on gov't jobs or dole. Way to go Canada!

I don't believe I would characterize Stephen Harper as "without substance." It is just that the substance does seem somewhat contrived. He seems to be trying to justify capitalism by using religious doctrine. Neo-conservative ideologues have advised their followers to use religion as a tool to manipulate people into selecting options that are not in their interests. I may be that is what Harper is trying to do.

Harper has spoken in one of his articles about what he referred to as the "morality of the marketplace." He has somehow identified his free market liberalism with an rather selective religious doctrine. He bases his promotion of self-interested individualism on the idea that salvation is a personal and individual experience but never speaks of the collective aspects of religion: communion and fellowship.

It is interesting how he has focused on the rather slim volume of old testament Bibical messages against homosexuality as a part of his value system. On the other hand he has totally rejected important concepts such as the "Thou shalt not covet" or the sin of avarice. He clearly accepts Adam Smith's idea that individual selfishness can be turned into "useful social outcomes." Hence, he has bought heavily into the "greed is good idea."

I find it rather unusual to hear people say they will follow Harper because he is a religious person. They need to consider how selective he is in using religion. I have attended the services of various Christian denominations and never heard one preach selfishness as a religous value and yet Harper's whole ideology is based on that concept.

During the last provincial election a member of the audience listening to the candidates debate, was heard to whisper to their friend, after listeing to the pc candidate; 'I heard that the pc's could run a round bale, with a blue button on it and still win, by gosh I think they're trying it' and guess what it happened!

Yes, it is disgusting, Catherine. Albertans think that the conservatives paid off the debt whereas it was there refusal to pay the bills ( they put the money in the heritage fund instead) which caused the debt and lead to downsizing government services and wages paid to provincial employees .
I worked with a rancher who had received $50 in payments from the provincial government for the cattle export mess and still couldn't see that 200 million provincial dollars going to a few multi-national meat companies, who were not suffering financially, was a scandal.
Then there are the rest of us who think that paying regular prices for a market over flowing with beef is supporting the cattle producers, who receive less than half of what they used to get per pound of beef. Again the multi national meat corp.s are the winners.

Yes Milton and that is what has to be remembered next election, although the Libs were sending the money, when the people realized the disgust of this situation and pressured the Libs to force these multi-national corps to open their books, who said no, the Cons of course. The Libs and the Cons are a great corporate team in my opinion. So it never happened and the corp got richer and the farmer is left begging, because of NAFTA once again! Nothing fair about our free trade agreements.

That's right N Say. Harper went to Richview Collegiate in Etobicoke--in the west end of the Toronto megacity. Apparently he had childhood asthma, was a long distance runner and a big loner.
