Tourism Charlottetown & the Prince Edward Island Convention Partnership will receive $450,000 from ACOA and will contribute, along with other partners including Downtown Charlottetown Inc. and the City of Charlottetown, a further $150,000 towards an Historic District wayfinding, signage and streetscape project including gateway signage, historic district marketers, interpretive story boards and wayfinding signage. The project will enhance the visitor experience via storied interpretation as they navigate the Birthplace of Confederation. The City of Charlottetown will receive $382,000 from ACOA and $500,000 in private sector contributions to improve the look of the downtown business core with a “façade” program which will make the area more attractive to visitors. Applications are now available through City Hall. The City organized an ambassador program for the tourist season with a primary mandate to promote Charlottetown as the birthplace of Confederation. The Fathers of Confederation Building Trust will receive $150,000 from ACOA, $15,000 from the Friends of the Confederation Centre of the Arts and will contribute a further $30,000 to develop a major multi-media program called “Confederation Birthplace Evolving”. This program will use interpretive panels, plasma screens, a unique sound installation, banners and a booklet to develop a connection between the historic 1864 meetings and the 1964 opening of the Confederation Centre of the Arts. This display will be available at various locations throughout the Confederation Centre. The Charlottetown Area Development Corporation will receive $18,000 from ACOA and will contribute a further $16,050 to research, produce and publish a guide that will outline the places and events of the 1864 Conference. It will also undertake a second project to erect a permanent monument at the Old Protestant Burying Ground to recognize the contribution some of the earliest inhabitants made to the heritage and history of the City of Charlottetown and surrounding areas. Some of the family members of the Fathers of Confederation are buried in that location. http://www.acoa.ca/e/media/press/press.shtml?4004
