Missile Defense In Place In Alaska, But Will It Work?

Posted on Monday, July 18 at 09:16 by jensonj
The defensive system is so complex some compare it to the effort to build the first atomic bomb. During an attack, a 5-foot-long warhead traveling at 15,000 miles per hour must be identified, tracked and demolished by a collision 150 miles above Earth. A near interception equals failure. In congressional testimony and news conferences, White House and Pentagon officials have made confusing, sometimes contradictory statements about the status of the embryonic missile-defense system. And in the past year, both interceptor test flights failed. The malfunctions and costs — roughly $31.6 billion between 1996 and 2011, with no final price tag — lead critics to assail missile defense as a limitless research program that doesn't give the president a viable option in time of crisis. Whether the interceptors are considered functional or experimental doesn't make much difference to the Defense Department. Today, workers are busy on the second missile field, putting into the ground 10 more interceptors by year's end. On-again, off-again "Later this year, the first components of America's missile defense will become operational." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=2002386083&zsection_id=2002111777&slug=starwars17m&date=20050717 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on July 19, 2005]

I don't know, or care, whether such insane plans will work, or not, but I wish these idiots would take their damn 40 year old B 52s from over our heads. For 30 years we only had 1 or 2 a day. Now there are 5 or 6. This is now going on all the time. What the hell are they preparing for in the middle of BC and wasting precious fuel and resources, causing more pollution?

When we start adding up the costs of maintaining these idiot planes, and
some 750 military bases over the globe, spending hundreds of billions on the enforcement of "American interests", we have to wonder about the "cost effectiveness" of their insane globalization schemes, basically profit cows for a small minority, while millions in America are starving and homeless. But, of course, looking after their own people would be a "liberal, socialist conspiracy", while wasting resources on weapons and colonizations is "good conservative free enterprise".

The first step to stop terror attacks should be the dismantling of multinational predators colonizing the world.
The main reason for these terror attacks is the theory of neoclassical market economics. It is that simple.

And the question never touched on by these articles: If an incoming missle on a polar re-entry is shot down before it reaches it's target in the continental US - where will the nuclear warheads fall? Any Canadians feel safer now?

Warheads may fall in Canada, but the warheads are designed to arm themselves on their final approach so there won't be a nuclear explosion. A radioactive hazard would be the result, much like that Soviet satellite that crashed in the N.W.T.

If Seattle were incinerated by a North Korean missile, how would you factor that into your cost/benefit analysis? If North Korea only threatened to incinerate Seattle if the US doesn't pave their streets with gold, how would you factor that into your cost/benefit analysis?

I see. So, just as long as it's in my backyard, not yours. And you're OK with that? Uranium and plutonium are not just radioactive, they are extreme poisons.

Elbonia launches a nuke against the US, and Canada gets the cleanup.

"Please sir, can I have some more?"

Caleb, you have nothing to worry about anyways... they can't hit any missile.

So you would rather see millions of Americans be incinerated than have to clean up a small patch of radioactive waste. The depth of your hatred is really disturbing.

I would rather see the American Government play nice with others that have nuclear missles in order to protect their citizens. Then no one gets hurt.

Nice playing the 'hate' card to illicit emotional response to the things I have not said or implied. The depths of your argument are revealed in it. Nice to know you prefer myself and other Canadians to get heavy metal poisoning rather than promote world peace.

Why would any government, even a bunch of fanatic madmen, like the North Koreans appear to be, want to incinerate anybody in the USA, when they know that it would bring total devastation on their heads ? Dictators may be egomaniacs, but not suicidal. Stop the provocation and threats of "first strike" and it will stop a good part of terrorism.

The claim that terrorists blow themselves up and are building nuclear weapons because they're "against our way of life and freedoms" is bloody propagandistic nonsense. They are reacting to violent attacks and economic schemes, like the "globalized marketplace", that steal their eyes out and leave them destitute.

A major multinational corporation forced on an impoverished country breeds more terrorists than any number of religious fanatics. Even the CIA had to admit that the invasion of Iraq created a hotbed for terrorist training and actions.

In any case, what are these blasted B 52s doing over our heads every day and night? Looking for terrorists in BC ?

If terrorists don't mean what they say they mean, if it's all propaganda generated by the West - then why would they attack a church in Pakistan, killing Pakistanis who happen to be Christian?

As with other such situations throughout human history, you would be amused to listen to the jokes we Fairbanks Alaska ex-military, current military, and military construction project personnel tell about the Ft. Greely missile project, and others of its nature. The humor is created by the verifiable truth we speak, contradicting the verifiably fallacious words of the government and news media. The United States government will collapse its empire, on schedule, by bankrupting the ability of its people to pay for military illusions sustained by the deadly US wars against those illusions. Eight of the nine most recent wars started by the US, were against nations which did not attack the US or a US ally. The consequences are not escapable. Have patience, and enjoy the humor of these humans. They were designed for their own entertainment. May you learn the most knowledge of the most concepts, most efficiently. DougBuchanan.com

Maybe North Korea wouldn't have any interest in threatening the US, be a peace treaty signed between the two countries instead of an armistice.
Btw, who started the sabres rattling ?
