There are many reasons why this exists here are but a few:
For example:
• NAFTA provides US investors and corporations operating in Canada to be treated as if they are 100% Canadian. They must be given "national treatment". No government may favour Canadian enterprise for any reason over American interests. (The same is not offered to Canadian Businesses in the U.S.)
• On all contracts over $25,000 the Canadian government will treat US companies as Canadian for the procurement of goods by government. In addition, Canada must grant unexamined "temporary" entry to an enormous range of people - among who are scientists, teachers, researchers, medical experts, journalist, librarians, etc. - as well as most corporate personnel in transfer, or other.
(The same is not offered to Canadian Businesses in the U.S.)
• Canada must grant unexamined takeover of Canadian enterprises worth between 5 million and 150 million, and it must grant unexamined takeover by indirect acquisition of enterprises worth up to a half-billion dollars.
• Canada’s National Medicare, which saves the average U.S. business roughly 38 cents on every U.S. Dollar of profit in employee medical benefits.
• Lower Liability and Legal costs. (example: malpractice lawsuits)
• Lower employee wages
• Lower employee benefits costs other then medical
• More Graduated Employees with Higher Educational Standards then those found in the United States of America
• Lower Operating costs including energy and natural resources.
• Having Canadian holdings allows them to be eligible to receive all levels of Government Business and Training funding as well as being able to have standing in the developing of regional and national business policy making including lobbying standing.
• By having in Canada American business interests, American Companies and Corporations can maintain their competitiveness in the global market, maintain 10 of thousands of U.S. jobs and keep their cost down at a competitive level locally and internationally.
Outside of Government Officials, Corporate Executives, Businessmen, all who have personal agendas and national loyalties other then Canada due to the fact that most corporate and medium businesses in Canada are foreign, owned and operated, most average Americans don't think about Canada on a daily or monthly bases. They don't care about what Canadian foreigners think about America or anything else for that matter. Americans, as a whole, could care less if anyone else in the world disapproves of their policies. The average American wouldn't care now or in the future unless it impacted their lives directly today at this very moment. Which for the most part Canada doesn’t? Thus, the attitude of who cares what happens to Canada or Canadians, coldness, indifference and lack of apathy. The less one knows of something the more it is likely that one will have little if any understanding nor compassion for it.
Canadians, though, live in a relatively large country but with a population 1/9 the size of the worlds only surviving superpower, thus Canadians don't have that luxury of ignoring its southern neighbor will, wants, dislikes or not caring what they are doing in the world. Since Canadians have allowed themselves to be tied and integrated into the United States of America so much already it is almost if not impossible for Canada to act solely on its own accord without U.S. approval. As the saying goes one should not put all one’s eggs in on basket. The demands by present and past U.S. Administrations has now become totally undermining economically, militarily, territorially and threatening to Canadian
sovereignty.
It has now clear that looking after our own domestic markets first and foremost will Canada be able to have control over its destiny as a free democratic country. Only by having diversified foreign trade agreements with other countries other then the United States, will Canada be able to enforce a level playing field with outside markets and free trade agreements with the United States. A level playing field is but a figure of speech then a reality in the trade between Canada and the United States of America. Canada must now move to process more of its own raw materials for market instead of sending it across the border to the United States of America in which the cost is becoming prohibitive. If we don’t, Canadians will soon not be able to afford to buy the finished goods that we have now come to depend on.
The world has now changed from a multi-national attitude to a uni-lateral attitude of continents. It is time that Canada change as well in its national and international thinking. Canada must speak as an equal in its foreign and domestic affairs and trade agreements. Canada must be willing to stand on its own without having a need for foreign governmental approval, support and national defence.

I can understand the US putting tariffs on our goods to protect their own businesses and that is because they have always been better at looking after their best interests. So far Canada has always been of the mind that giving the US anything they want has what has been in our best interests. And, the only reason we can see that that was not in our best interests is because now we have no say over how things are being done in our own country. When you own nothing you have no control over what is being done with it. Good move USA, I guess your alternative would have been to bring us democracy by coup earlier than you're doing now.

Canada should be a producer but takes the easiest route. All the resources at our fingertips and no gumption to USE them. The average consumer is content in buying foreign and temporary products with their higher wages. Cheap, unreliable and inexpensive.

It was our leaders that signed the agreement. Blame the Yanks all we want, but it still falls on our shoulders. And NOW we got Harper!
The statement from the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Credit Suisse First Boston report "understands that the laws and treaties make it impossible for Canada to `win' in the real world, even if they win every time in court. It takes years to get through the courts, and by the time you do, the tariffs, duties and quotas the U.S. has imposed have completely wrecked the targeted industry in Canada. So who cares what the courts say" shows an official and deliberate agenda to target and undermine Canadian industry and in turn undermine Canadian domestic and foreign affairs.
It seems to suggest, too, that US leaders have always had, and expressed, a clear interest in subordinating Canadian wealth and freedom to the needs and wants of the USA.

Perception is two thirds of what we perceive reality to be.
Difficult decisions are a privilege of rank.
Free trade ? What free trade ? There's no such thing. The main purpose of that TREATY, and not AGREEMENT, as advertised for public consunmption, is the removal of democratic decision making rights from people and handing them over to a corporate dictatorship.
It is the same situation as if we'd invite some friends for dinner, which would give them unlimited rights to stay and feed on us forever.
Then comes the "trade" aspect. A few years ago my son and his wife were making some small gift item, which was seen by an American tourist travelling through, who wanted to import it to the USA. My son went through an endless bureacratic rigmarole, when finally the US trade representative in the Vancouver consulate office told him: "Listen my friend, the purpose of free trade is not for you to sell something to us, but for us to sell something to you!" End of the story.
They never got a permit.
I've seen the economic destruction of Europe by WW2 and the resulting poverty and hunger going on for years. That taught me a bitter lesson we never forgot and worked to overcome for 60 years by now. And we succeeded.
The secret of survival and wellbeing is self sufficiency at the individual, family, district and national levels.
This simple fact could diminish not only poverty and environmental destruction, but also cut down the sickness and crime rates, much of it caused by the psychological effects of helplesness, wasteful economic and manufacturing methods.
When we say this to economists, they go into convulsions, foaming at the mouth with temper tantrums. Yet, they can show nothing beneficial for their fraudulent theories and policies forced on governments, but loss of decision making powers, increasing poverty and environmental destruction threatening all life.
So, what the hell is wrong with people that they still support this criminal idiocy ? And why do governments support universities with tax dollars to teach it ?
By the way, Emerson is a PhD economist, which explains his thinking and actions.
