That kind of "rationale" would apply equally well if one substituted "women" with "latinos", "blacks" or any of the other bugaboos to explain the simple fact that a functional grade five education simply isn't good enough to secure employment in this day-and-age.
The operative phrase today is "work smart, not hard", and people are not working smart because they do not have the education to do so......and there ain't enough jobs to go around where just plain hard work makes you a living.
We need two things to happen, else we see things just crumble through unsustainability.
Firstly, the education system has to be revamped to keep up to the technical reality of the workplace.
Secondly, we need to realize that, while the world is increasing in population, it is decreasing in pick-and-shovel work.
These two taken in concert, means that the 9 to 5 job is out-of-date. What that in turn means is, people "on the ground" have to be able to make a living working 1/2 the customary workday.
And for those who think the marketplace will iron all this out, well, it will. But not in anyway one would call pleasant.

Tody salaries are bigger and do not go as far as the cost of living is speedily outstripping what employers want to pay.
Labour shortages? Shit yes! With ther cost of fuel thro the roof alone,$10-$12/hr dosen't cut it. $40,000?yr seems to be the unspoken poverty line now. Under that and you ain't gota hope in hell
