Gen. Hillier's comments come as Canadian officials are using a NATO defence ministers conference in the Netherlands to pressure European countries – specifically Germany and France – to do some of the heavy lifting in southern Afghanistan, where virtually all fighting with the Taliban is happening. The lobbying effort is indicative of a growing rift between the NATO countries currently fighting in southern Afghanistan, and those that refuse to enter the dangerous part of the country.
