Done! But I don't think Harper will read it and certainly won't heed the NDP.

Over 7,000 have signed it, and growing.

Now it's time for the mass street rallies. Canada's 'mini-Vietnam'. I only hope we can stop it before too many more guys get killed.

I was the 7,934th. In addition, after watching Peter Mansbridge interview Jack Layton and then Peter Mackay on this subject last night, I e-mailed Mr. Mackay. The following is what I said...

Dear Mr. Mackay: I just finished watching your interview on the CBC National News. I really couldn't believe what I heard when Mr. Mansbridge asked you "what about sitting down with the Taliban as Mr. Layton has suggested?" and you replied by suggesting that talking to the Taliban or Hezbollah was not something that could even be considered. From this comment, am I to understand that my government does not desire peace in Afghanistan or the Middle East or is it a case that my government believes that the only route to peace is decimation of the enemy? Why is dialogue with the enemy out of the question? Isn't that the intelligent way to solve a conflict?

You call Mr. Layton "disingenuous" when he says that "we support our troops but not the mission" and you say that "we can't have it both ways". Bull! Just because I don't agree that our troops should be deployed to Afghanistan does not mean that I don't support the troops. You sound too much like an echo of an American Neo Conservative shouting "You're either with us or against us.".

You mentioned Hezbollah and the Taliban but what about Hamas? I realize that Hamas has been listed as a Terrorist Organization but western governments must admit that Hamas is now the democratically elected governing body of the Palestinian people and therefore has to be allowed a voice - that is, if peace is truly the goal. The west has been playing politics with the Palestinian people for a long time and all the while calling for free elections for the Palestinian people. Now that you've got an elected government of the Palestinians it's not good enough... That sir, is "disingenuous".

I admit I was not convinced that pulling out of Afghanistan would be the best option right now but with Mackay's comments last night, that changed in a flash. A flash of anger. He really put the government's agenda on the table.

---
Canada for Canadians

Yes, I too found him arrogant and spouting nonsense. The majority of his comments revolved around the telling of 'Taliban ghost stories' of horror, and spouting about how they , as well as Hezbollah and Al-Quaida, cannot be negotiated with.

OTOH, I found Jack far too sedate. That guy needs to GET ANGRY! Peter Mansbridge was attacking him quite strongly and he was too cool and composed, even hesitant in his rebuttals.

If he wants Canadians to get ANGRY over this and DEMAND the troops out, he needs to lead the way. It would be refreshing to see Jack Layton shake his fist and get red-faced for a change.
