CBC Radio's World Report Complicit In CIA Venezuela Campaign?

Thursday, November 29, 2007 To: CBC World Report Re: Connie Watson's report on Venezuela on World Report- dated November 29, 2007 I consider Connie Watson's report on what is happening in Venezuela to be deceptive misinformation. There are those in Venezuela who will vote NO on the referendum to change the constitution, and there are those who will vote YES to change. Ms. Watson only reports on the NO side's perspective--where is the balanced reporting?? Then she quotes unnamed polls saying that Chavez's lead in the YES campaign is dwindling and that momentum is on the side of the NO campaign. Why not divulge who those unknown pollsters are and the date of the polls. Also, why did she not refer to the latest polling information, as released by Reuters news that states: Poll Suggests Venezuela's Chavez in 7-Point Referendum Lead Reuters November 29, 2007 Caracas -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has at least a seven-point lead for a referendum on Sunday on reforms that would allow him to run for re-election indefinitely, according to a poll distributed on Wednesday. The poll by Consultores 30.11, which has worked for the government and accurately, predicted a vote result last year, showed Chavez moving ahead compared to most surveys in recent days that put him at best in a statistical tie. The survey of 1,600 voters taken November 21-27 said 56 percent of likely voters appeared set to vote for Chavez's constitutional overhaul and 40 percent set to vote against. But when the survey measured how undecided voters would cast their ballots and also took into account that others, who do not yet plan to vote, could decide to participate, the difference narrowed to as little as seven points. Chavez's proposal, which must be approved in a referendum, has popular sweeteners such as shortening the workday. But measures over expanding his powers are widely rejected. The Consultores 30.11 poll had a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points Finally, the real newsworthy item is not reported at all. Namely, the discovery by the Venezuelan government of the CIA's "Operation Pliers", which has a multipoint plan to discredit Chavez, spread misinformation around the world, and incite violence in Venezuela. That kind of meddling in the internal affairs of a nation would not be tolerated in Canada, and goes against all international laws which specify that people have the sovereign right to decide their own internal political state of affairs without intervention by outsiders, such as the CIA. Given the CIA's long history of intervention in Latin America, which has led to advancing American interests over the interests of the people' of Latin America, which policy has caused many deaths and gross human rights violations, why is CBC taking the side of the CIA? This letter is going to the CRTC as it illustrates an example of biased, deceptive, uninformed reporting by the CBC, reporting which fails to meet the legal mandate of the CBC to inform the people of Canada in a truthful balanced manner. Given the above I demand that CBC immediately pull the report by Connie Watson - it is disgraceful that you allow such unbalanced, deceptive propaganda to be broadcast across Canada and the world. Yours truly, Peter Dimitrov Attached: “CIA Operation Pliers Uncovered in Venezuela http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/analysis/2914 And more: http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/analysis/2917

It's not obvious when you hear just one of her 'Latin American' reports -- it is, if you make a point of reading her reports about anything, especially the Mexican election last year, is that she only channels the US State Department and it's SO obvious...
I've written specifically about that 'mockingbird' and some of the over the top textbook NED crap she does and the CBC either knows and supports it or it's how the CBC does business.
I've given up on them -- I am a big listener to CBC radio and have been for years, but I don't accept anything they say at face value anymore. I consider them to be the same as Global or Corus Radio.
If they wanted to follow journalist standards, then they could 'ape' the BBC which at least has retained some measure of balance.
Sunday Edition with Enright is a joke -- period and not even really very professional (anyone catch their anniversary wankfest celebrating their 'repetitions' which consists of a 'nice' self-loathing Catholic boy talking about movies, religious guilt and Opera with his nice Jewish lady friend -- it's wretched)
As It Happens -- some life, but the balance is all gone and they seem to ONLY want to talk to some of the most rabid of Brookings, Hudson, AEI 'tanks' from the US, in order to give us Canucks' perspective. That, in and of itself, is suspicious -- we got redneck neo-cons jerks here -- why fish? I usually look to the CBC to find where our 'foreign policy' diverges from US foreign policy -- not when it sync'ed.
The Current -- Anna Marie Tremonti can't do an interview, even if her life depended on it ... but she could easily fill that Empty Void called Shelia Rodgers, who is still collecting a paycheck at the Corpse. (amazing what blowing 'Mister Canada' and remembering an old song will do for a media career -- why can't talented people get on that bandwagon)
Plus side -- in Vancouver, their LOCAL morning programming is much improved...Rick Kluff (the longtime sports guy!) is great as their Morning Show guy -- he can get down right rude to the 'lame' mouthpieces the gov et. al. send out to flakcatch. Their morning coverage of the Dziekanski Killing was spectacular and aggressive. The type of thing well organized professional journalists should be doing and they made it look easy with probably next to no budget. Kudos!
But that's what kinda the problem about the CBC; little bits and pieces are good, but the whole thing (esp national feeds) are propagandistic and just plain ideological like the rest of the North America media.
But back to Connie...
Check the archives and you'll find one report she did just after the Mexican elections. The new city council of Mexico City was fulfilling their election promise and allowing a by-law to give local women the right to some access to abortion. Now, why would she consider this so important when it was just after the election -- Oaxaca is on strike and sieged, an American journalist was just killed by Mexican security services in cold blood, the Calderón's newly elected fraud government had just dispatched 27,000 troops to quell unrest in the southern provinces, Orabor announces his 'shadow' government, there is a blazing drug war which at one point saw 8 severed heads dumped on the dance floor of a nightclub, and where is CBC intrepid reporter, Connie Watson...well she's interviewing the Archbishop of Mexico City about the 'soul' of Mexico. The 'reporter' has framed this story as simply 'Obrador's' sour grapes after the election. A real jaw-dropper report, as you try to figure out whether Connie is really a Canadian woman who likes her 'freedoms' or some spook desperately tossing out a 'frame' to 'disinform' all the OTHER events going in Mexico.
Contrast that report with one she did about the election of Ortega in Nicaragua within a few weeks. In this context, the fact that Ortega had promised to make hospitals and schools free is never mentioned. What does Connie 'NED' Watson report about -- well Ortega in order to get the endorsement of the Catholic Church agreed to uphold the existing abortion ban.
WTF?
A clear attempt to minimize the entire scope of Latin American politics by continuing to play into racist stereotypes that the ONLY thing that matters to the Latin is his/her relationship with the Church. Constantly...
Gimme a break.
Let's play role reversal.
Let's say the 'Latin' Catholic/Conservative Broadcasting Corporation (heh CBC) covered our last elections. Now let's say the elite from Globovision also covered our last elections.
Would it be fair for the CBC to characterize our elections as an implicit rejection by Catholics of the 'favoured' Catholic candidate (Martin) and then 'report' on how Martin's liberal stands on abortion, schooling, gay marriage rubbed the faithful the wrong way? But what about the 'other' side of the debate -- Globovision -- who state bluntly that there is a new day for Canada as they have rejected the traditional Catholic candidates for a 'new look' Protestants with closer ties to America.
Now -- if your're a Canadian; you might read these important editorials and wonder exactly what dimension the writer is coming from because that is NOT the way it is on the ground.
BUT-- let's say your an intellectual in the Latin America and you thumb through media like anyone else and places like Canada, while up Norte, are not really important enough to pay attention to...but in the interest of fairness, you read through the local take on Canada's elections.
Now if the ONLY thing you can remember about Canada is 'the last election was won by a Yankee Protestant' guy and you read all about it! in the 'paper or heard it on the radio, then you clearly are not informed about Canada.
This is how Connie Watson looks at all of Latin America.
I swear the idiot will find a weeping statue in Caracas by the election

i agree fully with your media analysis my friend, about Ms. Watson's framing
of the 'non-news' - when the real news is there ready to be reported on. I
think perhaps she is a wee timid to chase after the real news, and I am being
nice when I say timid. Likely a gal from a nice middle class background - who
just feels more a home/at ease interviewing people from her class and who
represent her class-interests. ...which pretty well what prevails throughout
most journalism in Canada. But, given the prior involvement of the US in the
2002 Venezuela coup, and the complicity of world media, and the notable
gains to the vast majority of Venezuelans from the Bolivarian revolution as
led by President Chavez, and the repudiation of neoliberal and authoritarian
neoconservative thought, and the very acute danger posed to the Venezuelan
people and all the people of that region should serious violence break out, or
another coup manifest, or god forbid a contract assaisination by the CIA, the
CBC will be complict in setting the stage for this, and we the Canadian
populace must not just sit back and allow Empire to do again what they did
ad nauseaum in Chile, Argentina, Nicaragua, Haiti, Panama, We must tell CBC
that their one-side propaganda is not acceptable, and is in direct violation of
the mandate as established by the Canadian Parliament and the CRTC.

In the best case scenario, she's an Edwardian Fop reporting from the Empire and getting drunk on flat Gin, complaining about 'flat' escorts, the plumbing, and wandering about hotel lobbies looking for 'men with credentials' that might speak long enough to file before the next paycheque...

She's unprofessional and dishonest, like most of the CBC ... or like the rest of the Machine and their 'narratives'.

What, as if anyone taking their marching orders from the corporate funded media could have any integrity to speak of? These people are slithering whores, and they have to be in order to hold down the job for any length of time.

I've shut my radio off during the Meech Lake debate and haven't put it on since. Have about 4-5 radios gathering dust around the house that haven't been on since then.

TV is crap, we can't stand the commercials, and never bothered to buy a dish, so the only channel we can get now is the former BCTV, now Global propaganda garbage pile, and the only thing we watch is the 6 O'clock News, going on for 40 mins, of which about 5 or 10 are of any real interest, but it does give us some contact with the outside world, apart from the computer.

By the way, why should anybody buy anything from a TV commercial ? Could anybody be that stupid ? The mute button
on our remote is the shinyest, even for the junk that comes on during the news.

    Ed Deak, Big Lake.
