Census Site Has Such Heavy Traffic Date To Complete May Be Extended

Posted on Wednesday, May 17 at 09:28 by sthompson
Heard from an IT reporter this morning and apparently part of the reason StatsCan is allowing people to complete their census forms late is the amount of traffic on the website.

Statistics Canada has posted some info on this under Important Updates:

This site is temporarily experiencing traffic that far exceeds capacity.

Please note that the online questionnaire operates beyond May 16. We encourage you to try again before May 23rd. This will satisfy your obligation to complete and return your Census questionnaire.

Note that the census form has now been made available to Linux users as well.

Wherein, this from our pal, Anil:

"Nobody has done an exercise like this in Canada where you
open up the Web to everybody (to fill out the census
online)," he said. "We didn't have any kind of a track
record, any kind of experience as to how many people could
log on at any moment."

snip

"We knew yesterday was going to be challenging no matter
what," he admitted. "We had no idea, no precedent of what
kind of load we would have."
