25M Prize To Beat Greenhous Gas

Branson compared his challenge to the competition launched in 1675 to devise a method of estimating longitude accurately. It was 60 years before English clock maker John Harrison discovered an accurate method and received his prize from King George III. "The Earth cannot wait 60 years. We need everybody capable of discovering an answer to put their minds to it today," Branson said. "We have only our own ingenuity and we have no hope of a meaningful solution unless we find a way to work together," Branson said. "Necessity is the mother of invention." http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/02/09/climate.prize.ap/

That's weird - it's already invented. I saw a show on global warming, and a guy has invented 'artificial trees' that you can set up anywhere, all they do is sit there sucking carbon out of the sky 24/7.
I can't find any news on a prototype out yet, though.
---
“The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous, the essential act of warfare is the destruction of the produce of human labour”

Richard Branson knows that money makes the world go around. The incentive is now there for those to be rewarded for a good cause. Imagine what would be achieved if the world spent the same money used for wars on this goal instead. The USA may not even be in dept had they taken this route instead of the reverse.

Close to my sentiments exactly boflaade. For years I have been saying the same thing about NASA too. That's why I propose we burn the stacks of money and kill the men and women in our military oursleves, make it a day of show and tell, so that ALL of us can see the waste and destruction that is the reality of war.

I also propose that when cutting down our forests we do it from the edge of our cities outward rather than hide the destruction behind a "forest of deception", so that none of us really "get" how devastating our plundering has become and how much of the habitate for the planets wildlife we have completely destroyed. People need to SEE what we are complying with and then be asked "is this what you really want"? Birds nesting as their homes come crashing down and then we wonder why the insects have taken over?

I want a planet with REAL trees and REAL birds in order for us to survive. We can't make enough manmade-resource-sucking contraptions to fix our problem, we have to become as close to nonconsummers as possible in order to allow the environment the time it needs to heal.

I use to go off-road around the lower-mainland. You could see the line drawn where one could see and not see. The magnificant forest was just a facade for what lay behind. The war lords are giving "us" democracy while devastating the country they chose. We, Canadians are suppose to be proud that we belong to the UN & NATO. We are told that our troops are there to "reconstruct". Little is said as to why we must "REconstruct. The destruction has been brought on by those "brave" troops with all the modern technology applied. Now we are told that the destruction is neccessary to do good. We are to support the troops and receive the body-count, in proof. "Ten more Taliban were killed today and when enough die, we can start the construction." It's incredibly sad that there are those who believe it.

Hey, it's called a 'Scenic Fringe', otherwise known as 'Hide the Clearcuts from the Tourists Curtain'. The latter being more descriptive and accurate but too wordy.

    Yeah, it's called a forest.

    Hey, it's called a 'Scenic Fringe'<<

Calling it a "blind" would be more appropriate. Yet people want a new home in a new suburb. All the lower mainland is clearcut just so people can have it. Houses balancing on steep slopes for the veiw and all within a few feet of each other to get the most value per square foot. Monster homes for smaller families and more cars to get to work on new paved streets. I cringe at the thought of ever returning to that enviroment. We bought 40 acres of treed property on VI. We made the smallest of footprints to live here and are surrounded by trees. Why do people like to be crowded and then plant a tree on their property to be "in" with nature?
