Calgary SPP Protest Eyewitness Report

Posted on Saturday, August 25 at 09:34 by sthompson
After a few speeches at City Hall, we marched to the US Consulate about a block away for a few more words from participants and a round of O Canada to drive our point home. It was touching to see all generations represented, from toddlers to elders, and to see concerns ranging from the "War on Terror" to labour issues to our natural resources being talked about. Some people walking by did stop and ask what it was all about, and were really disturbed when we told them what was happening in Montebello this week. Global's coverage was really lame, basically skimming over the issue and not covering WHY we were protesting. CTV's was better, though buried deeper. CBC Radio in Calgary had coverage the next day, though I still don't know if they actually came out... I didn't see them. I didn't have a chance to check the Calgary Sun on Monday, unfortunately. If anyone saw the coverage, I'd love to hear what it was like. I didn't see police, though I know they knew we would be protesting. Also, I know we would have had a TON more people if it were any time besides August. A tough city & province to convince that we shouldn't be going to bed with the Americans. Even 50 protesters is a record for a province that is anti-union and where the dollar is most important. Congratulations to those who at least made some people pay heed.
