Cyber Command May Soon Watch Over Us.

Posted on Saturday, November 18 at 14:45 by Ed Deak
The new mission is to “deliver sovereign options for the defence of the United States of America and its global interests - to fly and fight in air, space and cyberspace”. It’s not surprising that the USAF is concerned with aircraft, satellites and missiles (of Strategic Air Command) because they fly. But what stretches credulity is that the USAF, through Cyber Command, may be getting into the civilian communications area. The logic for this USAF expansion, judging by the USAF article, is that electrons, essential to all communications, also fly (or at least move in three dimensions). The cyber domain includes all the places an electron travels including landline, Internet and wireless communications. This means that Australia’s phone network including Internet sites will potentially be a monitoring area involving Cyber Command. Dr Lani Kass, Director of the US Air Force Cyberspace Task Force and formerly a major in the Israeli Defence Force, describes the Cyber Command concept this way: http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=5053 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on November 20, 2006]

I read about the USAF's interest in cyberspace warfare better than five years ago.

Considering that the vast majority of communications between banks, nations, and companies, not to mention ALL real time battlefield intelligence is based on the networking between databases, any nation, not just the US would be utterly insane if they didn't make preparations for comabt in that arena.

    It's just plain common sense.

Aren't these communications already extensively monitored?

Yes, but Cyberspace Command is actually going to be employing hackers and system experts in order to bring down enemy information infrastructure, among other duties such as information and data gathering.

Or would that be a CSIS job?"

    Thanks for the laugh RPW.

I'm a ludite so I'm not sure if I understand exactly what is being proposed but considering that North America is so far behind in internet speed it sounds as though anyone else could just open the door and walk in anywhere.

Also, do you think if we the people owned the infrastructure of our communications networks we wouldn't be at such high risk of cyber invasion? Wouldn't it be easier to monitor and upgrade without fights from corporate bottomliners? Private companies are already too willing and eager to share our private information with each other.

If we the people owned the infrastructure, a better question might be, how much are we the people prepared to participate in same? A major problem we have is our unwillingness to be less than myopic, not much different than a chick in the nest squawking, "Feed me! Feed me!"

We are like a town full of rubes, being fleeced by the travelling snake oil salesman......except we never learn.

(Gosh! Don't ya just love metaphors!?)

Good point RPW, but like anything else in life, if you want something bad enough you will get it.

The people don't want it bad enough, and the corporations do.

It's the same reason we as a culture are losing our civil liberties, the people don't want to keep tham as badly as the elites want to take them away.

"I am not so sure it's a case of the people not wanting them, so much as not realizing they are disappearing -- like the Aral Sea?"

To a degree, yes. But for a lot of people their ignorance of that fact is a deliberate choice.

And sadly, it seems that a lot of people believe that Party B will do better than Party A, so they vote out A and in short order find out that B is just as bad if not worse.

My honest opinion is that it isn't the politicians or parties that should be dumped and replaced but the entire system.

With what, however, is the question.
