Canada At War....

It was a stunning turnaround. Just six weeks earlier, at the last Commons debate on Afghanistan, MPs from all parties fell over one another explaining how they supported the troops.

The Bloc Québécois and Liberals were fully on side with the Conservatives; the New Democrats were dodgy but accepting. But in that exercise, MPs did not have to vote publicly, one by one, on the substantive question of whether the troops should stay on.

This time they did, in the certain knowledge that their constituents would eventually discover how they voted.

Domestic opposition to the war has been rising steadily, ever since 2,300 Canadian troops went into Kandahar earlier this year as part of the Americans' Operation Enduring Freedom. With combat deaths now almost routine and no apparent victory in sight, that opposition seems fated to grow.

For Canada, this is unprecedented. The norm for this country is that most people stand behind a decision to wage war once it is made.

It's not always remembered that in the years leading up to World War II, a good many Canadians — inside and outside of Quebec — were hesitant about involving themselves in another European conflict. But once war was declared in 1939, most of the public quickly came on side.

So, too, in 1950 when Canadian troops were dispatched to take sides in what was effectively a Korean civil war. Initial hesitation was followed by public acceptance.

Being against our engagement in Afghanistan is not only extremely selfish but even more stupid if I may say so. Why should we sign military treaties (like NATO) if it's not to respect them when the time is coming?

The War in Afghanistan is fully supported by U.N. and NATO Organizations. This is not a "Bush War", it's a real war for liberty, peace and freedom. Did you ever thought of what may happen if we step back? Think of all these people in Afghanistan who will suffer the return of the Talibans!

Sometime peace is inevitable without a conflict!

The war in Afganistan started as a farce and continues to be one. Because of 911 the Americans garnered support for the war where the rest of the world was caught in the masterful propoganda campaign voting for military action. They asked the Taliban to hand over Bin Laden or be invaded whereas the Taliban did what any country with honour would do. They asked for proof of the crime and they would hand him over. This is what I would want my country to do if the U.S. demanded my extradition. 911 was a means to invade and not a reason. The Taliban was not our enemy nor were they a threat. They were villified by the U.S. as an evil regime that eats babies and such. Sure their culture seems barbaric and cruel to us but they are certainly no better off now. Bush now says he doesn't care if they catch Bin laden. This is true because now they have a base in the region as described in "the project for the new American century"<br />

We should not be footing the bill for American hegemony we should oppose this on all levels of government. You may say this is crazy to pull out but I say its criminal to remain.

You are right it is selfish. I don't like to see my money being spent to enrich the military supply industry. Those who support these wars are advocates of self-interested individualism so I am not sure why they should see anything wrong with my opposition.

Freedom, peace, and liberty are all empty terms unless defined. In the world of crony capitalism they mean someting like using the power of capitalist governments to enforce "peace" through military power ensuring the "freedom" of capital to expoit the situation for their own profit and the "liberty" of the capitalist to promote his individual self-interest.

It is this kind of "elitist" thinking that will eventually destroy our political and economic system.
