Wow. A whole 9 million dollars. This is just a feel-good press release on the part of Paul Martin.

This srikes me as quite positive - provided they live up to the promise
    and wipe out the rest.

I know it makes Martin look good, but it also looks good for Canada because it is good, the debt is crippling these struggling nations, I hope many others follow our lead.

I agree it's a good thing, even if it is only small and only a start.

9 million could pay off the debt of 360 students in Canada (at $25,000 per student). 1.1 billion could pay off the debt of 44,000 students. Will that happen? Not bloody likely. Call me cynical, but I don't think the 1.1 billion is going to the Africans. If it does, it'll be tied to conditions like accepting genetically modified canola or more privatization. I just don't trust Martin.`

Problem being, WILL the money actually wipe out the debts? Or will it end up in some few pockets, and the debts continue? Or will "new debts" inevitably appear, as resources are siphoned out of these countries, bypassing the general citizenry as always?

It may make us feel good; it may be the "right thing to do"; but will it accomplish anything where it counts - in the pockets of the average citizen?

<i>"I just don't trust Martin."</i> <p>And rightly so...........he has a documented reputation of providing much "sizzle" - but very little "steak". </p> <p>---<br>RickW
