UK Census Data Used For "Sim CIty"
Date: Monday, November 27 2006

New Scientist is reporting that UK planners have created a software "Sim City" based on the information from 25 million households in the 2001 UK Census:

Developed by geographers at the University of Leeds, the simulator uses anonymised data from the 2001 census to model the attributes and behaviours of over 25 million households, analysing multiple scenarios to predict urban planning effects.

This seems relatively harmless for town planning, but it will probably inevitably end up in the hands of less benign actors. It is essentially a database on 25 million households, with a predictive model for future behaviour
