Tories deny contract for military cargo planes has been awarded

OTTAWA (CP) - The Conservative government has denied a published report that it plans to award a $4.9-billion contract to U.S. aircraft-maker Lockheed Martin.

No deal has been signed to replace the military's aging C-130 Hercules cargo planes, nor has a request for proposals been filed, James Moore, the parliamentary secretary to the public works minister, told the Commons on Wednesday.

"In fact, the contract will not be awarded until August of 2007," he said in response to a question by NDP Leader Jack Layton.

A senior vice-president at Lockheed Martin, Jack Crisler, was quoted as saying he expects to enter into negotiations with the federal government to map out the plan to deliver 17 updated C-130Js.
