Canada to Reconsider Telecom Limits in Review (Update1)
April 11 (Bloomberg) -- Canada may consider scrapping foreign ownership limits on telephone and cable television companies as part of a review of telecommunications regulations, Industry Minister David Emerson said.
``If there are compelling reasons why foreign ownership restrictions are an impediment to the competitiveness of the Canadian economy and consumer choice, that issue has to be reviewed and considered,'' Emerson told reporters in a conference call today.
Emerson said the federal government set up a three-person panel to review the regulations, in keeping with a pledge in the February budget. Companies such as BCE Inc., the country's largest phone company, have criticized the industry regulator for being slow and ineffective.
The panel includes Andre Tremblay, the former chief executive of Microcell Telecommunications, a mobile phone company that was acquired by Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. last year. It will deliver a final report by the end of 2005, Emerson said.
