Red-Tory-Blue-Liberal party?

Canada seems to be more divided than ever before. The Liberal government has been shown to be corrupt, while the new Conservatives have not managed to make any major inroads into Canadians' minds. It speaks for itself, unfortunately, that the Tories, despite corruption, crime and dishonesty on the Liberals’ part, cannot move into “majority government” territory, if one is to believe polls.

The main problem appears to be that neither party can deliver what the majority of voters want. As a result, this country has become divided to a point where it seems almost impossible that any consensus will ever be reached again.

With each side entrenched in their respective positions, supporters fling insults at their counterparts. Opposing viewpoints frequently result in name-calling such as “fascist” or “communist”.

What Canada truly needs is a centrist, mainstream party that speaks to a majority of Canadians. At this point, and please allow me that small bit of partisanship, the country would be better off with the Tories running things.

But this is a short-term, Band-Aid-like solution to our problems.

The Progressive Conservatives and the Alliance/Reform were merged under the new banner of the Conservative Party of Canada, which contrary to public opinion, is the closest we have right now to a centrist and mainstream party.

But I would go further: once the dust has settled again, someone should step up and form a new party that brings together Red Tories and Blue Liberals. Such a Red/Blue "coalition" of mainstream ideas and concepts would, in my opinion, appeal to the average Canadian voter.

I don’t like extremes: some true-blue Tory who quotes the Bible all day long has as little in common with me, or the average voter, as a red-as-they-come Liberal.
