Canada, U.S. share longest 'secure' border in world: Ambassador Wilson
March 29, 2007 - 16:57

WASHINGTON (CP) - Canada and the United States share the longest "secure" border in the world but must guard against adopting policies that obstruct the legitimate flow of people and trade, Ambassador Michael Wilson said Thursday.

In a speech to the American Society of International Law, Canada's top envoy to the United States said a lot has been done to tighten up border security since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

Canadian and U.S. police forces have integrated border enforcement teams. The two countries share intelligence daily and work closely together on immigration matters, he said.

"While we once proudly said that the Canada-U.S. border was 'the longest undefended border in the world', now we really should be saying 'We share the longest secure border in the world'," he said.

Some people think the border should be a checkpoint, but most Canadians and Americans see it as a gateway, Wilson said.
