Stop the 'abuse,' says taxpayers' watchdog

OTTAWA -- Federal politicians need to stop "abusing" taxpayer money by using the House of Commons budget for partisan shenanigans, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says.

The Conservatives used money set aside for constituency mail-outs for attacks against Winnipeg Liberal MPs Anita Neville and Ray Simard.

The Liberals used the same budget to launch a mail-out campaign in Saskatchewan that attacked the Conservatives.

"This is a gross abuse of House of Commons resources," said Adam Taylor, spokesman for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

The Conservatives were unapologetic for their Winnipeg mail-out.

Calls to the Speaker's office were not returned yesterday.
