For a plant employee, you get written up (3 write ups = fired). For a contractor, you get banned from site on the spot. <br /> <br /> Oilsands plants are very strict - and up front - about anything in your system that can impair your concentration and cause you or your co-workers injury or death. Even cold medication you're supposed to let medical know about. If Medical thinks you shouldn't be working because of cold meds or other prescribed drugs, they'll give you modified/desk work, or send you home (with pay).<br /> <br /> I've got nothing against casual use, but this guy was an idiot given the fact everyone who works on an oilsands plant is given the information needed to prevent failing a urine test. For MJ use, the advice is usually 'save it for your days off'.

Marijuana breakdown products turn up in your urine for approximately 30 days. Cocaine breakdown products are gone within a week and they don't give you a piss test for alcohol, just a breathalyzer. They don't test you for prozac or any of the other psychotic side effect drugs. Which of the above drugs do you think are more debilitating?<br /> <br /> I have worked with people who were drunk the night before and they are ten times more dangerous than those who smoked grass before coming to work. Yes, I would rather be operated on by a doctor who smoked pot than a doctor who drank alcohol.<br /> <br /> The cocaine and prozac crowd are the worst though.<br /> <br /> Workers who are hurt on the job and who smoked marijuana or use cocaine or any of the other proscribed drugs are told they will have to submit to a urine test. Most of them quit at that point because if they flunk the test not only would they be fired but they would have to complete a drug abuse course to be eligible for rehire in the future and if they were rehired they would then be subject to random tests forever. <br /> <br /> If you are parked in a vehicle and someone runs into you , you will be tested as well as the guilty party.<br /> <br /> I know workers who did not report injuries because they would not be able to pass the test. They continued to work even though they were hurt. This endangers everyone else and if the corp.s cared about the safety of their work force they would change their policies to something more effective.<br /> <br /> It seems to me that all the corp.s are concerned with is not having a WCB claim show up on their record because this would drive up their WCB premiums. The provincial and federal governments go along with this privacy invasion because their WCB and EI payments are reduced. Guess what, the worker is the only one who gets screwed. Ooooo, big surprise.
