To carry things even further we in Waterloo have a 'habitat for humanity' Restore which resells donated building supplies. I volunteer there tearing old homes down and anything they don't want I take. I've got enough maple to hardwood three homes! I just run it through my planer and voila. I also get antique lumber like fir mouldings and beautiful doors. Plus, when I volunteer on fridays I unload the truck that travels to all the stores in southern ontario and get first dibs! I almost drooled one day when I found a wrapped stack of birdseye maple pieces, when I brought them up the clerk said "how does $2 sound?" <br /> Just another note though, I used to work for K-Mart, which was sort of an american subsidiary. However, K-Mart paid its workers far more than Zellers ever did. When Wal Mart came to Canada K Mart closed all the stores, not because it wasn't making money, but because it wasn't making ENOUGH money. Just another reason to support Canadian business.

Boycotting American box stores is one thing, but really, if you want to solve some problems, such as 'the little guy' going out of business, then wouldn't Canadian boxstores be the enemy you know? <br /> <br />Also, are all holdings of Canadian Tire, or Rona Canadian owned and controlled? <br /> <br />(That's a question, I don't actually know, but I wonder!?!) <br /> <br />

She is Canadian, and lives in Canada. <br /> <br />Rona is a little different. The parent company is publically traded, but the majority of it is owned by the store operators. Each store operator owns a certain percentage of the parent company, so it depends on who the store owner is as to the ownership. Since there are not yet any Rona stores in the States, I'd guess the majority of the company is Canadian owned. <br />

well, in fact this poll is past date. Jonquiere's walmart in now officially unionized. will hte price have raise ? no. what they gonna do ? close the store that is unionized. They will never accept union, and will do everything to get that out of there <img align=absmiddle src='images/smilies/frown.gif' alt='Frown'>

If all Wal Mart stores in Canada then they could stick together. As in the family that owns Wal Mart won't have a choice but to accept unions in Canada.

A little bit off topic. But some how related. Consumers are so dangerous. I mean really. We will demand all the things that will destruct our society in the long term. Consumers need to stop ignoring the fact that some of societies problems are linked to consumer behaviour.<br /> <br /> Kevin

The big box store issue can be fought. I've heard of activists protesting at the entrance to a store (or just off the store property, I presume) and succeeding at turning customers away. A nation-wide campaign could garner the attention necessary to make people stop and think about the consequences of their actions.<br /> <br /> Who will enter a Walmart to save $3 on a disposable camera when they've just been told and shown that this will directly lead to the exploitation and consequent oppression of the world's most vulnerable?<br /> <br /> Again, the idea and the potential is there. But a movement such as this requires a catalyst.

Funny how you actually do hear anti-wal-mart shoppers locally. I went to visit the new Wal-Mart here, well not new but they built a bigger separate Wal-Mart away from the mall. I decided not leave Wal-Mart and went shopping at the mall where zellers was to do my actual shopping. <br /> <br /> These two people infront of me at the cash were finishing up and then they left. Me and the cashier got into the conversation about shopping at zellers because it was Canadian, and that I felt shopping at Wal-Mart is like shooting yourself in the foot. While you may be shopping for cheap products now, you may not be wealthy enough to afford their products when they own the total market share, buying all of their competitors.<br /> <br /> She told me the young kid that was before me told his mom he wanted to shop at zellers cause it was a better store, and it was Canadian. He said he didn't like Wal-Mart. The cashier tell's me that she hear's many customers say they won't shop at Wal-Mart because its an American company.<br /> <br /> This is just one story out of many. <br /> <br /> Kevin
