The other benefit is that governments like Alberta's can gain the rainfall of such prices, and then pass down the royalties to us.
Most people across the world and in Canada for that matter are complaining about the high price of gas. However there are some benefits to this.

The high cost of gas may stop suburban sprawl. Here is the reason. People who live outside downtown and cities have to spend more on gas. You have to drive longer distances and families need multiple cars since there is very little public transit. The high cost of oil may encourage people to start moving into the cities and downtowns across Canada. Just look at countries such as France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Another benefit is it may stop outsourcing. Today, companies have to produce their products in Latin America and Asia to serve the US-Canada market. It is cheaper this way. With a higher cost of transportation, companies may have to start sourcing closer to home. Plants in Latin America to serve the Latin America market and plants in USA-Canada to serve the USA-Canada market.

Harjit Gill
Winnipeg
I agree with you though I think immigration is driving sprawl as well.

They would also have to raise royalties again. We are getting WAY less than Norway which is getting like 14.9% royalties....

I know we receive a low amount in royalties, and I wish we could collect more. Frankly, the oil corporations can afford it, especially with the lowered corporate taxes now in place, or at least will be.
