Equation for Ethanol:

a) Taxpayers Dollars

b) Constantly Flushing Toilet

a + b = Ethanol
Ontario ideal for ethanol plant: company

The president of a California eco-energy company says Ontario is "probably the best spot" in North America to build a forest biomass-to-ethanol fuel plant.

Dr. James Latty of MEMS USA announced Jan. 4 the details of his company's plans to build a $150-million US conversion plant in Hearst. MEMS, Villeneuve Construction and the Town of Hearst have been working on the plans since first meeting last November.

"We believe Canada is leading the world in ecologically-responsible conversion of biomass into renewable fuels," said Latty in an interview with Northern Ontario Business.

If Ontario government approvals to source waste wood and other permits are granted, the plant could be producing 227 million litres of fuel-grade ethanol by 2010, when mandatory provincial regulations requiring ethanol additives in motor gasoline go into effect. The company believes there is enough wood waste in the Hearst area to supply their proposed facility for 15 years.

The facility would create 150 plant jobs and between 300 and 400 jobs during construction.
The project team would consist of MEMS USA and Villeneuve Construction Ltd. of Hearst, which has come aboard as an equity partner and is providing a 600-acre parcel of land for the gasification facility.
continued

(NOTE: the company is also seeking support from Queen's Park in the form of loan guarantees)
