It's true, I don't think we have the capability to send troops to Sudan, nor would I want us to. This is what we get for 50 years of cuts to the military. If we plan to rebuild our armed forces then we have to reduce the strain put on them and help out from the sidelines. I know this isn't what Canadians want to hear about Sudan but it's the reality. Our forces have been overstretched and exhausted by commitment to peacekeeping missions without proper funding.
Maybe the US started caring about the UN when they realized that they pissed off the entire world by going to Iraq without mandate. I think working with the UN is definetly the right move for America, as it will help heal the wounds they have made with other countries. However, from what I can see, support for anything American isn't about to make a comeback anytime soon. Too bad, because it seems like no one else is going to take the initiative.
I wouldn't expect American troops in Sudan either, because I understand that their hands are tied with Iraq. That leaves the brunt on the work on African forces, unless European powers decide to help out, but I highly doubt that they will.
