Actually, the best subs out there are nuclear.
Depends on the use. Canadian City class frigates can detect nuclear subs easier because of all the noise they generate. The subs cannot return the favour, as the Frigates are powered by turbine engines that reduce noise and are more efficient.

A fuel cell powered electric sub would be extremely quiet, and that is the purpose of a tactical sub - to be a safe "hole in the water".
I just saw a story on Discovery channel about the German s31 subs which use fuel cells instead of diesels for recharging batteries. They can stay submerged for weeks on end ,and sell for $4 million each.
Sounds like a good option for Canadian enforcement of arctic sovereignty, and a better deal than the British subs we were suckered into buying, which are totally useless for arctic sovereignty patrols.
Brent
4 million? You must mean 400 million, right?

4 million dollars does seem a little optomistic.

The Israeli Dolphin-class submarine is of a similar design, and is priced at 320 Million USD.

4 millions? you can maybe buy a tank for that. If it really costed 4 millions, why would we still hang on to those old victoria class subs?
