Whelan, I only heard about this when they applied for immunity last year (it sounded like they reapplied every year) and received it from the UN security council. I think they called it an "extension" to the exemption they already had? I found it unbelievable. And yes I asked why would the world go along with something this ridiculous? But its these inconsistancies that make me question "What the hell is the real game, what are the rules, who are the players, when was this decided upon, and again why would the rest of the world agree? I think Canadians that are praising Chretien for keeping us out of Iraq really don't remember the story as accurately as it was. We were on our way to Iraq as far as I'm concerned, especially when we were trying to negotiate an extension to the inspections that truly was an impossible deadline for the agency to meet so in effect giving the US a thumbs up while feigning disapproval. It really wasn't until Chretien started using "We never agreed to take out Saddam" that we could finally really back out more sovereignly. It was as if he was "given" an out or "found" one that would be hard to refute. Had the Americans not publicly admitted that they wanted to take out Saddam, I think we'd be there. It's my understanding that the Canadian army is not the only army in the world integrated with the US. Probably most NATO countries are. The US has the largest army, and have managed it so that the rest of the world is dependant on them for winning any war they decide to take on. (Dr. Caleb would likely be able to confirm this?) It rather appears the US army is the mothership and all other armies fit in when and where needed. This ensures they will have control at all times. The need for world approval is strictly for the benefit of the US people. Otherwise I see no reason for it.

The US couldn't get the security council votes necessary to give immunity to their soldiers so they have withdrwn the motion. Yay!

Milton,

I did a little dance today when I heard that. It was a relief to have the council finally take a stand against the U.S. bullying. I guess the U.S. will be out arm twisting and bribing more countries for a unilateral agreement to leave their torturers alone?

I'd love to see mounties arrest Bush the next time he's in Canada and to charge him in the World Court.
