I think it's more important that Canada withdraw from NAFTA; and anounce to the world that it didn't work. I don't see that happening, though. Canada has a business elite, often abetted by branch plant management, that sees its future in alliance with the US. These people really don't care what you or I think; they want what they want and will do anything to get it.
It is time we put in retaliatory tariffs in place. Better yet and export duty on oil. I encourage everyone to send an e-mail to your local MP and demand retaliatory tariffs and/or an export duty on oil.
Firstly, oil is controlled by the provinces as it is a natural resource, and if you want to stir up the separatist movement in Alberta, all you need to do is federally impose a tariff on a product that Alberta controls.

I live in Alberta, and know exactly what would happen if Ottawa tried such a measure. The separatists would be filled with glee.

Natural resources are the property of the provinces, as spelled out in the constitution of this land.

An export tax on oil likely wouldn't cost Albertans a thing, since the US would still need the oil, but I'd expand it to all forms of energy, including electricity. That would take away any perception that Alberta was being picked on as well as making the tax more effective.

By the way, the provinces might have jurisdiction over natural resources, but the feds are in charge of trade and have every right to implement an export tax.

This would stir up separatist sentiments in the West.

The NEP is the originator of the separatist movement in the West. Why would you add fuel to the fire by doing the exact same thing?

I want polluters taxed, and taxed heavily or just shut down period. I cannot for the life of me understand why we allow a few money grabbers to defile the world the rest of us have to live in. So Alberta should be paying huge to the rest of us if they feel entitled to destroy land, air and water that belongs to all of us.

Lesson learned:

Don't sign bilateral trade agreements with economies exponentionally bigger than your own.
