Excellent posts all. I will be short (not like some of us here ) and just post a quick link to a recent commentary made by Dr. Gilo Muirragui, a retired senior economist from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
It supports Calumny's reflexion on differences between Cuba and Canada. We in the rich westernized world have a tendency to compare our situation within an east-west line, forgetting the north-south axis, the south being the real source of our high standard of living.
According to Dr Muirragui, the road to success suggests control over what is produced, how it is produced and for whom.

Link : How 10,000 misrule the world

Michou, that was a great article. We should get the names of those 10,000 individuals and start posting them all over the net and everywhere else. Shed some light on them.

Calumny, that entire post of yours had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the mention of advertising.

I don't know why we let advertisers make ANY decisions. These are the people who are dumb enough to want to put giant mile-wide signs in outer space, so we can see Nike and Pepsi logos when we look up towards the stars. That's almost as stupid as BMD.

Imagine if, instead of bombarding us with propaganda, there was a directory referring you to specific stores based on the type of product you look up. Then it would be the consumer's initiative that starts every transaction.

Just a thought...

But, not stupid from the seller's point of view (Wish upon a Pepsi?).

I personally like the idea of banning all advertising. What have we to lose...TV?
Given that foreign trade is presented as such a critical matter for Canada, I thought I'd check out available stats. Canadian import/export stats are available at the links below.
Export
Import

These links won't surprise anyone. We largely import manufactured goods and export resources.

The following link is from International Trade Canada. It provides an explanation of how foreign trade benefits all of us Canadians.
Why Trade Matters

According to our government, trade enhances our lives.
But, as Michael Moore might ask, does it?
....
Just wondered what others thought.
have a look at the following paper:
Intrafirm Trade of Canadian-based Foreign Transnational Companies

roughly HALF of all our trade is internal to US corporations!! so it isn't much of an exagerration to say that our "exports" are really US corporations taking our resources
