And yes of course Democrats are going to prop up some reports saying they were cheated, and as usual no one will challenge them and they will be accepted as fact by the "free-thinking" left. It's kind of hard to challenge reports that are so far-fetched. It's like arguing against the existence of Leperchauns.

Z Whalen: Hey! Your not suggesting that Leprechauns are imaginary are you (draws sword)... Seriously, though, your right that they shouldn't be given special treatment among immigrants, and actually, it would probably take so long to create new regulations that by the time they were in place, Kory's scenario would have played out.

However, if I were in the States, I'd be pissed right off. Every election, there's always some irregularities, but these last two have been rank. I'm not sure why, but there never seems to be any momentum to reform their Electoral College, or to be rid of the offensive thing, altogether. I think perhaps these liberal or 'free-thinkers' should hold off and try to reform the system before they give up. Obviously, there are excellent arguments for keeping it (it was set-up because the founding fathers understood that the people couldn't be trusted to vote correctly [hanging chads, Bush, ect]), but doing away with it would ensure that they who recieved the popular vote would win the day (like in Canada), or a new proportional system.

So before they give up and move to our frozen, unforgiving tundra, perhaps they should try and actually do something that involves a little more activity than voting once every four years, huh?

They can vote from here, so becoming temporary refugees is pretty effective. The only people who can move here from the US on short notice are really the well off and highly educated. Everybody else has to stand in line.

Given the anti-intellectualism that has been gripping the US since the age of Reagan, I think that might be a positive lesson for them. They've lasted twenty years because the smart people have quietly managed things...greased the wheels and taught the kids and nodded knowingly from the sidelines.

Let the stupid people really run things for a while. You want George in power, have him. You want your kids to get laughed at when they try explaining how Adam and Eve trump Darwin outside of the US, so be it.

The problem I see is that not all of the smart people will leave, so the US will stumble on. It will fail either way, but as long as there are still smart people there the purposeful stupidity will spread like a disease.

I welcome Americans like all other people from different countries of the world into Canada but there is a limit, about 250 000 a year. I have a concern and if a member could reply to it, please do. Is the Canadian Ministry of Immigration prejudice to Northern and Eastern Europeans? The immigration from those areas to Canada have slowed significantly.

Rats and hypocrits ? Because they're liberals and free thinkers ?

Before I make any further judgment on it, could you expand on this opinion of yours gaulois ?
No they will not be only Libs and Free Thinkers. Neocons will try to sneak through this if the boat is sinking. These are the truly dangerous people. Libs and Free Thinkers do not tend to be loaded with money and can't afford our property prices.
Thanks for the clarification gaulois.

It is my opinion that true American liberals and free thinkers should be allowed in Canada if their government starts persecuting them for their beliefs. This may happen sooner than we think and the Patriot Act is the tool and excuse the Bush administration will use to legitimize their actions.

As for the neo-cons, you're right. They are a bunch of lazy, treacherous weasels and they would probably jump ship instead of getting a taste of their own justice and the mess they have made of their country. Unfortunately, our immigration laws caters to those who have the $$ to buy their security while those at the mercy of their bloodthirsty captors will be silenced by any means necessary. Will Canada and Canadians just stand by without a move so as not to disturb the monster and have its eye turned towards us ? It is times like these that nations redefine what they're about and hopefully, Canadians will show themselves to be humane and caring towards all who do believe in social justice and true democracy.

We've often called Americans our southern friends. Future events will tell us what kind of friendliness we are capable of.
Is the Canadian Ministry of Immigration prejudice to Northern and Eastern Europeans?
I would say yes. I had a friend who tried to emmigrate to Canada from the Ukraine. He is a brilliant engineer, and was head of the Physisc department at the University of Kiev, who developed new Integrated Circuits and processors is the former Soviet Union. When the Union collapsed, he hadn't been paid in months, so he wanted to move. He had a good job lined up with the Alberta Research council, and would have been a huge asset to the Alberta High tech sector, but Immigration wouldn't let him emigrate because he didn't have the required cash.

Really really really dumb, IMHO. All that knowledge, a good job and a valuable asset, and he can't come because they think he'll be a welfare bum.
Integrated Circuits? *shudder*

I've heard immigration laws here tend to turn back a lot of qualified immigrants. And those who do make it in often can't work in their field of expertise because their credentials aren't recognized.

I'm not sure that what Dr Caleb is describing targets Eastern/Northern Europeans... it could be more systematic than that.
