Article Link

To be sure, 9-11 changed everything. Yet Americans must realize that if being within their security perimeter means we must implement security measures that are an affront to our national conscience, give unqualified support to Washington's foreign policy misadventures or suffer the indignities of their unfair trade policies, maybe we should begin to diversify our trade by looking to Europe and Asia for new opportunities.
To continue to push for further integration with the United States is to fail to recognize that Canadians and Americans are growing apart philosophically.
We envy the individual economic prosperity of Americans, but embrace the collective security of the European welfare state, being unwilling to shoulder the social consequences of unfettered capitalism.
The list of contentious issues over which the majority of Canadians now find themselves at odds with our American cousins is ever-growing, so this attitude of "bite your tongue" and "tow the line" just doesn't wash if we are to preserve our integrity as Canadians.
Chris Moulder would have us swallow our pride and sacrifice our autonomy to preserve the status quo. I disagree. It is time for greater economic diversification, not further integration.
MIKE LUTSCH
Tecumseh
© The Windsor Star 2005 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on April 25, 2005]

Once it was decided that Canada was to be a branch-plant society of American capitalism, the issue of Canadian nationalism had been settled.--George Grant

It's an American site, for goodness sakes, and I don't believe a single thing Americans have to say, even if they are leftists (apparently). Probably a CIA blog to lull us into thinking there is a single American worth saving.

it has nothing to do with just americans, but look at the bigger picture, the wealth of this world ought to be shared by us all and not just a few, there ought not to be divisions amongst us humans, but a sharing of what we work at, this has nothing to do with marxists, this is about how a select few ( corperate world ) wants it for itself, and wants the mass of humans as slaves for that select few,

why are we so blind to the reality, of what is going on, everything that is happening is for this one goal, domination of the masses by a few, i know it sounds simplistic but that is what is happening, when the wealth of the world is distributed in a fair way then all share in the wealth, and this makes sense,

real capitalism is not free enterprise but a slave dominated excercise, look at your lives and those of your neigbours, this american website says it all it's about people, it's about common sense, it's about fairness and honesty, it's about how to reconize the BS that corperate world has been giving us......this site makes a lot of sense, and if we people can work together instead of fighting amonst ourselves we can defeat this monster called greed, again remember the bad coperate world wants us to fight amongst ourselves,

there is a good corperate world also, that which allows profit to be shared by all who work for it

other points to consider, without the people, who will fight thier wars, or who will work in their factories, or farms or industries, without the police who will enforce their rules.....and who are those that made these rules and for whom were the rules made for.....think about it

why are we fighting amongst ourseleves, there is enough wealth to go around for all......it is because of the rules that a select few made, that has created what we call misapproiated sharing of the wealth........yet if the these rules were not enforced what would we have ?

it is the rules that we make for ourselves, that counts, and ask this question, are the rules that are being made, is it for all or just a few...and who profits from it, all or just a few ??

You're falling into their disinformation trap, Dave. The real answer is the China-Canada alliance -- their missles in conjunction with our proximity to the Americans.

The desire for cheap labour is probably not the most basic motivation of the wrong wing. A more basic motivation may be the need to dominate others. The need to dominate is described in 'The Wimp Factor: Gender Gaps, Holy Wars and the Politics of Anxious Masculinity' by Stepen J. Ducat.
But the idea of using a label like 'cheap-labor conservatives' is a sound one. The linguistics professor George Lakoff has written about 'how conservatives use language to dominate politics'. See http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2003/10/27_lakoff.shtml. He talks about how they use terms like 'tax reform' to frame the debate.
The idea of using a label like 'cheap-labor conservates' would seem to be a way to begin turning the tables.
While both Ducat and Lakoff confine their discussions to the American context their ideas are, at least in part, transferable to our context. For example, we could perhaps drive home a point if we began referring to NAFTA as DAFTA (Dumb and Foolish Trade Agreement).

Your the reason why I'm so happy that country formerly known as Canada will soon dissolve into a meaningless puddle of the politically correct, undefended, morally vapid, ... but wait- all that is true now!

Hey Dude, just keep on making those same ineffective noises. You're doing just fine!

Yeah, that ought to protect your precious Sovereignty! LOL!
You think us bastards are bad, Amnesty international estimated that their govt executed 10,000 people last year, mostly for non violent offences, most had their organs harvested whether they consented or not. That statement is the perfect example of the ignorance on this site.

Statement by anon: 'You think us bastards are bad'

Are you part of the U.S. admin, or corporate greed if so then the statement is true, but if you are an American citizen, like many of us are part of the people of Canada and don't represent the elite of the world, then the why would you put yourself among the 'us' in your statment?

We are against oppression, slavery of the people, poverty and forced democracy which is another word for a new dictatorship or puppet government. We are all about real democracy, where the people of their chosen country have a voice, and are not considered a commodity for trade.

Just wanted to clarify which 'us' you are really representing. We generally speaking don't hate American people, we hate (if we hate at all, most of us don't hate)the people who wish to enslave us, and they are not all Americans.
